GREENVILLE - Funeral services for Charlotte Nick Keigley Crawford, 89, will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenville. Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, August 30 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a short prayer service at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Burial will be in Indianola at the city cemetery at 2 p.m. She died August 27 after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marine Lt. Louis Keigley of Crowley, La.; her second husband, John (Jack) Crawford; her parents, Emily and Adeline Nick; a brother, Don Nick and a sister, Mary Nick, all of Greenville.

A lifelong resident of Greenville and communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Charlotte was a devoted wife and mother of eight children. She attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and graduated from Greenville High. Her time at Mississippi Sate for Women was shortened because of pressing family matters and World War II. Charlotte’s devotion to the church and her hometown were apparent as she shared stories of “old” Greenville with her children and grandchildren about the Depression, the Greenville Air Base and war years. A patriot of the “Greatest Generation,” Charlotte lost her first husband, Louis, at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Her brother Emil and her second husband, Jack, both served in the U.S. Army in the European theater during World War II. She instilled a love of county and the flag in each of her children and grandchildren. Humble servants of the Catholic Church, Charlotte and Jack faithfully attended and worked for St. Joseph’s parish and schools all of their lives, and both took great pride in the fact that all eight children graduated from the St. Joseph’s Catholic school system and went on to graduate from college.

Charlotte is survived by her devoted brother, Emil Nick (Bobbie) of Greenville; her youngest sister, Shirley Ayres of San Antonio, Tx. and her eight children: Louis Keigley Jr. (Susan) of Lafayette, La., Gay Gruetzemacher (Dick) of Chickamauga, Ga., John Crawford Jr. (Marilyn) of Justin, Tx., Dianne Crawford of Tulsa, Okla, Nancy Keith (Gery) of Coppell, Tx., Jim Crawfore (Leta), Nick Crawford (Jane) and Beth Crawford all of Greenville. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Michelle K. Barnett (Dennis), Laura K. Boren (Ben), Katherine Keigley, Ross Gruetzemacher, Hall Gruetzemacher, Martin Crawford, Emily Crawford, Nicholas Crawford, Elliott Crawford, Corey Keith, james Keith, Carly Keith, six great-grandchildren, as well as eight nieces and six nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Magnolia Gardens Residential Center, which was their mother’s home for the past 10 years, as well as the staff at the Washington Care Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of their mother in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Sacred Heart-St. Joseph St. Vincent de Paul Society in Greenville or to your favorite charity.
