Committee considers solution to walking trail safety, blight

Access to the Levee Walking/Bike Trail may be limited after Greenville’s Public Works Committee recommended reducing the hours of use in an effort to keep the area clean and safe.

Greenville City Councilman James Wilson, who is on the Public Works Committee, brought the concern before members at the June 17 meeting.

More than 300 job offers were extended last month as a result of a Washington County Economic Alliance sponsored job fair.

Anticipated sewer rate increases of 18 percent in the City of Greenville are being sent to the Public Service commission for approval.

The Greenville City Council approve a proposed rate increase for submission at Tuesday’s meeting. If the commission approves, the rates will be adopted by the council later this year.

Protecting the dozen or so residents in Freedom Village at any expense was stressed at the June 2 Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting by Tommy Benson.

Benson, who is the supervisors for the district, said he brought the issues at Freedom Village to the board’s attention because of prior flood event.

The Mississippi River is rising again and flood warnings are in effect for Greenville and Washington County until further notice, according to the National Weather Service.

At 11 a.m. Tuesday, the stage was 53.4 feet; the flood stage is 48 feet.
