“We are small in numbers but we are big in heart.”
These are the words that Suzzette Suggs used to describe her St. Joseph Catholic School basketball team on Monday night after the Irish just defeated Riverside 48-15.
The Lady Irish only have seven players on their team, but this does not mean they don’t have big goals.
We always start the game with butterflies but once we get our rhythm then we start to play,” Suggs said.
Emma Kate Threet led St. Joseph with 18 points. Cha’Karia Holmes scored 13. Tykira Rancifer scored 11 points. Kamiya Clark scored six points.
Clark and Rancifer are the two seniors on this year’s Irish team, and Suggs said Threet, a junior, will also be a key leader.
“I think we can be great,” Suggs said. “We have great potential. We are small in numbers, but we are big in heart.”
Monday’s game between the Irish and Bulldogs was tight early. Riverside coach Johnta Hughes had her girls keeping up with the Irish until the middle stages of the second quarter, and St. Joseph pulled away to a 23-12 halftime lead.
The Irish defense was suffocating in the second half; however, and it allowed Riverside only three points in the final two quarters.
