AVON — Riverside High School junior Shakera Stewart is learning a lot about herself as she helps guide her young basketball team this season.
LELAND- After a valiant surge to take the lead in a low scoring game, the Leland Cubs ran out of gas in the final quarter to fall 37-35 to the Coahoma County Panthers Tuesday night. Panthers senior guards Bentavious Galmore and Trumaine Jones led a fourth quarter charge where they out scored the Cubs 11-9.
The Mississippi Delta’s Jewish population may be small, but the heart of their annual Hanukkah celebration is not.
“It’s a festive luncheon,” said Rabbi Debra Kassoff of the Hebrew Union Temple in Greenville. Hanukkah this year starts at sunset Dec. 22 and ends at nightfall Dec. 30.

Lanier Loper has always been an active girl.
As a small child, her days were mostly planned out in advance. It was one activity after another.
“It actually seems weird for me when I have a day off,” Lanier said. “I am used to always doing something.”
