Avis Construction worker killed in work accident

HOLLANDALE — One Avis Construction worker was killed and two others were injured during an accident Tuesday afternoon in Hollandale.

The crew was performing road work on Morgan Street to repair busted pipes beneath the street.

The construction worker, whose name has not been released, was on a backhoe when the incident occurred. While the worker was operating the backhoe, a light pole was knocked down, causing one worker to sustain a fatal blow to the head and another to sustain a back injury.

The United Way Housing Initiative Committee has canceled the 2020 workday due to Covid-19. The decision was a difficult one to make. But given the circumstances our housing committee felt it was the right decision to make. Lonnie Smith, United Way Housing Initiative Committee Chairman, said our homeowners are in the high risk category for contracting Covid-19. Smith said another concern was our volunteers who work to repair the homes. He said some of the teams have been ask not to participate in volunteer activities during this time.

City not expected to raise taxes in FY 2020-21

Local residents shouldn’t have to worry about an increase in taxes in the new upcoming fiscal year.

A special meeting of the Greenville city council was called by Mayor Errick Simmons to discuss budget proposals for fiscal year 2020-21.

The mayor and council came to a general consensus that there will be no increase in taxes, nor capital expenditures in FY 2020-21, unless in the case of an emergency.

A great deal of consideration was given in regards to the Mid Delta Regional Airport budget and that of Parks and Recreation.

Having won three straight state football championships, the St. Joseph Catholic School football program has created a dynasty, and senior leaders on this year’s squad see no reason why it has to end.

Senior leaders Kaleb Lockett and Jordan Scott both agreed the Fighting Irish have everything it takes to win a fourth straight state championship.

“We know that a lot of people are doubting us because Dillon (Johnson) and Trey (Benson) are not here anymore, but we know that we can win another state title,” said Lockett, a wide receiver and a cornerback.

City of Greenville officials are ramping up on their efforts to put a stop to illegal dumping.

An illegal dumping task force meeting convened on Thursday with Mayor Errick Simmons, Police Chief Delando Wilson, Fire Chief Ruben Brown, Planning Director Carlon Williams, Code Enforcer Daryl Richards Sr. and others in attendance.

The council has discussed the issue of uncleanliness, trash, litter and debris around the city on several occasions and on May 19 adopted an ordinance, which states:

3 men arrested, charged with attempted murder for July 4 shooting

Three men have been arrested for a shooting that took place early this month that hospitalized two people.

At about 4 p.m. July 4, two men were shot at King Stop, 207 Mississippi 1 N. One of the victims, a 26-year-old male, was shot in the leg and the other victim, a 33-year-old male, was shot multiple times in the body area, according to a report by the Greenville Police Department. Both were hospitalized and are now in stable condition.

Man arrested, charged, for kidnapping 2 children

After an Amber Alert was issued Friday morning for two missing children, a local man has been arrested and charged with two counts of kidnapping.

Officers with the Greenville Police Department (GPD) first responded to the 2000 block of Alexander Street at 2:17 a.m. for a kidnapping.

Police were informed 23-year-old Nikolas Hampton arrived at the home and kicked in the back door. Hampton then took his 1-year-old daughter and 3-year-old stepson. Hampton was already under a protection order involving the children and their mother.

BOS set fine for those caught not wearing masks in county

A $250 fine for failure to wear a mask or a nose and mouth covering will soon be signed into order, per the Washington County Board of Supervisors.

The order was decided by a vote of 3-2 with BOS president Carl McGee and vice president Lee Gordon voting opposed in the motion made by District 4 Supervisor Mala Brooks.

“We want people to wear masks and I don’t have a problem with people being warned or cautioned,” McGee said. “A lot of people in my district can’t afford to pay a $250 fine.”

Man wanted after leading police on car chase

Greenville police are still in pursuit of a wanted man who led police on a car chase throughout the city Wednesday afternoon.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers with the Greenville Police Department who were in the area of U.S. 82 and Cedar Street located a Toyota Corolla being driven by 22-year-old Byron Butler, who already had an unrelated warrant for his arrest. He now has an additional warrant for felony fleeing.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop.

The phone rang at the mayor’s office earlier this week and the voice on the line said, “We’re having church on Wednesday, no matter what.”

The caller, according to Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons, claimed to be the pastor of Temple Baptist Church on Reed Road in Greenville.

The parking lot of the church was full Wednesday night with members of the church who gathered in parked vehicles to listen to Pastor Arthur Scott’s sermon broadcast on a low-power FM frequency radio.

In an effort to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Mayor Simmons and City Council have issued two new executive orders on church services and city wide curfew. These two executive orders come after Governor Tate Reeves’ Shelter In Place Order and the Mississippi Department of Health guideline stating, “Because of recent COVID-19 cases specifically linked to church gatherings, it is vital that Mississippians not attend in-person church services at any church or other type of facility. The 84-room hotel that broke ground in July 2018 is a joint partnership formed by the Chawla and Retzer families — Suresh Chawla, Mike Retzer and Michael Retzer.

A man died while swimming Monday at a boat ramp along the levee front.

Washington County Sheriff Department Assistant Chief Deputy Percy Miles said a 23-year-old black male drowned while swimming at a boat ramp along the levee front at Lake Ferguson.

“They were out there swimming, jumping off the side at the city boat ramp,” Miles said, noting the man was not swimming alone.

The man’s body was recovered by crews with the Greenville Fire and Rescue and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department along with the Greenville Police Department.

Sometime since Thursday of last week, vandals got on to the property at Warfield Point Park and caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the electrical system.

“It looks like a clean cut,” Donald Davis, building and grounds director at Warfield Point Park, said. “They looked to be stealing copper.”

Davis told the Washington County Board of Supervisors at their regular Tuesday meeting the damage occurred near the bathrooms.

Thieves destroyed power boxes and cut electrical wires.

An officer with the Greenville Police Department has been fired for using excessive force during an arrest Thursday afternoon.

The announcement was made Friday afternoon via Facebook Live from inside the Greenville Police Department. During the announcement, Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons and Greenville Police Chief Delando Wilson spoke on the incident.

At 2:58 p.m. Thursday, Wilson said officers responded to Budget Inn, 700 Mississippi 1 S., for a domestic disturbance where a female was allegedly being assaulted.

The City of Greenville, compared to other cities throughout the Delta, has never charged to pick up trash in the city, but that’s about to change.

In Cleveland, residents are charged $24 a month and it is included in their water bill. That bill also includes water and sewer, which is determined by usage, and mosquito abatement, which cost $7.

Greenville police are investigating the remains of a human body discovered on Christmas Day.

Officers with the Greenville Police Department got a call from a concerned resident shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday about human remains found in a wooded area in the 700 block of Clay Street. A firearm was also found next to the body.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said after the remains were found, the Washington County Coroner was called to transport the body to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy.
