Greenville Christian Lady Saints defeat Hebron Christian to advance to the state semifinals

BAY SPRINGS — The Greenville Christian School girls basketball team defeated Hebron Christian 71-35 Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the MAIS Class 2A State Basketball Tournament at Sylva-Bay Academy.

The Lady Saints jumped out to a 38-20 halftime lead and never let up.


Kings of the South: St. Joseph runs past opposition to clam South State Title

For the second straight season, the St. Joseph Catholic School boys basketball team captured a regional state championship. Now, the Fighting Irish have their sites set on winning it all.

The Fighting Irish (17-4) defeated Discovery Christian 65-41 Saturday in the championship game of the MAIS Class 2A South State Tournament.

Book Buddies stepping in again to help youngsters improve literacy

The Greenville Book Buddies Program developed by the Greenville Rotary Club is once again stepping in to improve literacy across the Mississippi Delta.

Rotary secretary and reading buddy director Richard Dattel recently announced Rotarians will tutor this year at O’Bannon Elementary School.

Washington County, statewide results are in, absentee ballots still being tallied

Incumbents held on to each of their seats except in the District 4 supervisor vote won by Mala Brooks by a mere 13 votes over incumbent Jesse Amos. The more than 700 absentee ballots have yet to be counted in any races as of press time.

Of the 32,026 registered voters in Washington County, 11001 cast ballots in the Tuesday election.



Charter School application in process for new Greenville school

An effort to provide an additional education option is underway in Greenville as preparations to apply for a charter school license have been made.
Reggie Whitley has started the process of creating a charter school, Relentless Preparatory Academy, with the Mississippi Department of Education Authorizing Board.

Police investigate human remains found on Christmas Day

Greenville police are investigating the remains of a human body discovered on Christmas Day.

Officers with the Greenville Police Department got a call from a concerned resident shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday about human remains found in a wooded area in the 700 block of Clay Street. A firearm was also found next to the body.
