1 man dead after being struck by vehicle

Officers with the Greenville Police Department are investigating a one-vehicle wreck that left a pedestrian dead.

At 6:17 p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the 2500 block of Highway 82 East in reference to a wreck.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said when officers arrived on scene, they found a 35-year-old black male pedestrian lying on the street.

“Upon arrival, it was determined a pedestrian was also involved in the accident,” Merchant said.

The pedestrian, who was hit by a white 2015 Chevy pickup truck, was pronounced dead on scene by the Washington County Coroner.

The drive of the truck was a 28-year-old black male, who was traveling westbound on the highway at the time of the incident.

The driver was issued a citation for no proof of insurance, Merchant said.

“This case is still under investigation,” Merchant said.

The names of the pedestrian and the driver are not being released by police at this time.
