Harry Vickery

JACKSON — Harry Edwin Vickery died Friday, May 29, 2020, at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was 85.

A native of Coffeeville, born Jan. 26, 1935, he was the son of the late Harry J. and Claribel Pate Vickery. Raised in the Delta and hills of Mississippi, he first met the love of his life, Ann Elizabeth Hall, in junior high. After graduating from Houston, Mississippi High School, he served in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis and the Suez Crisis among others. He attended officer training school and eventually achieved the rank of Commander of the Army National Guard.

On May 12, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart and together they enjoyed a 63 year marriage. After graduating from Mississippi College with a baccalaureate degree in business, he entered into a Ford automotive dealership venture with his father in Houston. He eventually relocated to Greenville where he owned and operated Kossman-Vickery Rambler Lincoln dealership for many years and then Vickery Chevrolet for almost 30 years.

Upon his retirement, he has been a faithful member of Northminster Baptist Church for 26 years, where he served as a Deacon and was active in the Men’s Sunday School and served as an usher. He had been active in various civic associations, including serving as president of the Board of Mississippi College, president of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and former chairman of the Delta Council, where he was successful in placing two large manufacturers in the community.

Harry was a man of great wisdom and integrity. This was matched only by his humility and his stewardship to his church, community and family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend with a wonderful sense of humor and warmth that filled the space he was in.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh Pate Vickery.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann H. Vickery; daughter, Lisa Claire Vickery Kelly (Dana); son, Edwin Hall Vickery (Libba); daughter, Carey Elizabeth Vickery Thomasian (Harry); brothers, Robert Barry Vickery (Val) and David Ray Vickery (Kitty); 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Private services were held Tuesday, June 2, at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, with internment that followed in the church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:  Northminster Baptist Church 3955 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS 39211 or Mississippi College School of Business c/o Michele Ricker P.O. Box 4014 Clinton, MS 39058.
