Joan Bagby

Joan Bagby

COVINGTON, La. — Joan Wilson Bagby, age 84, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, in Covington, Louisiana, after a period of protracted illness.

She was born and grew up in Greenville, attending Greenville Public Schools and  Belhaven College. In her early career, she taught English at Greenville High School. As she reared her young family, she was also a dedicated volunteer, serving as president of the Greenville Junior Auxiliary and a founding board member of Washington School. When her mother, Louise Wilson, retired from the Loudon Shoppe, a ladies clothing store she opened in the 1950s with her partner, Donnis Chaney, Joan and her sister-in-law, Pattye Wilson, ran the store that catered to Delta women for over 40 years. Joan ultimately returned to teaching, her true calling and passion, and taught at St. Joseph High School and then Solomon Junior High before her retirement.

From her family to her students, her career to community service, Joan embodied love and devotion. Not only was she wonderfully creative and deeply intelligent, her generosity, indefatigable energy, wry wit, and feisty spirit distinguished her.

Joan is survived by her son, Mark H. Garrett, of Petal; her daughter, Jessica L. Bagby, and her wife, Leitzel Ludwig Schoen, of New York, New York; her son, G. Hugh Bagby III, and his wife, Rhonda Roark Bagby, of Madisonville, Louisiana; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Hairston Garrett, of Little Rock, Arkansas; her sister, Kay Wilson Shurden and her husband, Walter B. Shurden, of Macon, Georgia; and her brother, Jerome W. Wilson Jr., and his wife, Pattye Weathers Wilson, of Oxford, Mississippi.

Joan is also survived by six grandchildren, Bowen Garrett and Haley Garrett; Hunter Garrett and Hanna Garrett Dennington; Sydney Bagby and Dylan Bagby; and three great-grandchildren, Aubrie Garrett, Addison Garrett, and Atlas Dennington; as well as beloved nieces and nephews, Sherry Shurden Brewer, Paula Shurden Batts, Walt Shurden, Lowell Wilson, and Keith Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerome W. Wilson Sr., and Louise Callaway Wilson; her husband, Garlick H. Bagby Jr., MD, all of Greenville; and her son, Garland J. Garrett, of Little Rock, Arkansas.

A memorial service celebrating Joan’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at First United Methodist Church, 402 Washington Ave., Greenville. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
