There was a moment when it looked like it was going to go their way.
In their MAIS Class 2A North State Championship match on Monday afternoon, the St. Joseph Catholic School won three individual titles. Manchester Academy won both titles with the Irish boy’s squad finishing four points behind, while the girl’s team finished one point short.
Chris Adams picked up the lone win for the boy’s squad with a (6-2, 6-0) win over MA’s Upton Hitt in the title game after winning his semifinal (6-0, 6-0). The girl’s squad swept the doubles matches with Carsen Mansour and Olivia DeAngelo sweeping both the semifinal and title matches (6-0, 6-0) and Sarah Hayek and Lindsey Lunn winning in the second spot (6-3, 6-0) and (6-0, 6-0).
Three St. Joseph teams advanced to the championship matches with Michael Mansour falling to MA’s Staten Greenlee (6-0, 6-0), along with Brittain Virden and Brice Johnson falling to MA’s Matt Carroll and Will Peeler (6-0, 6-1). Sarah Tonos fell to Manchester’s Monica Morrison in the title game of the No. 2 girl’s game (6-1, 6-1), followed by a three set win in the semifinals (6-3, 4-6, 6-0).
Mary Mahalitc fell to Alexis McGregor from Marshall Academy in a semifinal of the No. 1 girls bracket, while JoQuez Sanders and Christopher Tonos fell in the No. 2 boy’s spot semifinal.
The Irish will compete in the Class 2A State Tournament on May 9 in Ridgeland.
