Clutch Irish comeback to win another big postseason game
HOLLY SPRINGS — The St. Joseph Catholic School boys basketball team overcame an 11-point third quarter to defeat Central Holmes Academy Tuesday night in the MAIS North AA Tournament.
St. Joe’s next game in the tournament will be Friday night at 6:45 against the winner of tonight’s game between Carroll Academy and Greenville Christian School.
Dillon Johnson led St. Joe’s with 25 points. C.J. Moore scored 14 points and Kaleb Lockett scored 12 points. Raphael Henry and Trey Benson also contributed largely for the Fighting Irish.
“This team just steps up when it needs to,” St. Joseph coach James Hunter said.
St. Joseph won the game despite a torrid shooting display by Central Holmes Academy in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
C.J. Moore once again stepped up big for the Fighting Irish down the stretch. Moore score eight points in the fourth quarter and made four key free throws in the games closing minutes.
The victory earns the Fighting Irish a berth in the MAIS state tournament next week. The state tournament will be held at Benton Academy.
The Fighting Irish are learning to play as a team and are using the prolific scoring ability of Dillon Johnson to lead the way.
Johnson broke a school record with a 53 point game earlier this season, and scored 43 points last week in the district championship game in Yazoo City.
Coach Hunter lost seven seniors to graduation last season, but with a lot of hard work the players on his team have kept getting better.
The Irish have won their last four games and own a 14-7 record.
