After falling to rival Greenville Christian School last Thursday, the St. Joseph boys basketball team picked up two big wins the next two days.
The Fighting Irish beat Benton Academy 63-23 Friday night, and then turned around and defeated St. Aloysius 77-68 in the Red Carpet Classic tournament in Vicksburg,
St. Joseph coach James Hunter said his team is starting to really come on strong heading into the tail end of the season.
“The goal is to peak at the end of the season,” said Hunter, whose team now holds a 9-4 record. “We are really starting to get better as a team. More people are stepping up.”
Dillon Johnson scored 21points for the Irish during Friday’s game and 28 points Saturday. Benson scored 18 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds during St. Joe’s victory over St. Aloysius. Herman Brown scored 11 points against St. Aloysius and C. J. Moore scored 10 points. Kaleb Lockett scored 14 points for the Irish in the two victories. Jordan Jennings scored six points for the Irish in Friday’s victory.
Ashanti Brown records triple double
St. Joseph Catholic School’s Ashanti Brown had the first triple double for her school in many years on Saturday as she helped lead the Lady Fighting Irish to a 60-41 victory over St. Aloysius in the Red Carpet Classic tournament in Vicksburg,
Brown finished the game with 28 points, 10 steals and 10 rebounds.
Chakoriea Holmes also had a fine game, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds.
Brown is not only a great basketball player. She is also a fine student who has a 4.0 grade point average.
“Ashanti is a leader and the rock of our teams,” St. Joseph coach Suzette Suggs said of Ashanti after she was named the Planters Bank Player of the Week in December. “She is like another coach on the floor.”
The Lady Irish are next scheduled to host Tr-County Academy tonight.
