Simmons’ Jaleila Gadison wins Planters Player of the Week

Simmons High School senior Jaleila Gadison, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, describes herself as a laid back and easy-going teenager. But, on the basketball court, Gadison is anything but easy going.

Gadison, a four year starter, is averaging a team high 18.4 points per game for her Lady Devils. Simmons coach Bernita Alexander calls her a team leader who leads by example. This past week, Gadison helped lead her team to victories over Shaw, North Side and South Delta.

“She has developed so much over the years, and this season she is having the best year yet,” Alexander said. “She is a very laid back girl. She likes to laugh and have fun, but she is serious when she steps on the basketball court.”

With Gadison’s leadership, the Lady Blue Devils have a 13-6 record this season. The record, however, is deceiving since Simmons has played a lot of games against teams from higher classifications.

No matter the competition, Gadison has continued to step up big this season. Whoever the Lady Blue Devils are playing, Gadison said she tries to motivate her teammates.

“I always tell my teammates to never get discouraged and to keep trying hard,” Gadison said.

Gadison, who plans to continue playing basketball in college, said her team this season is focused on winning the district championship.

Gadison is just one of many talented players on this year’s Simmons’ team. Some of these players include senior Tiara Willis, sophomore Na’Riah Robinson, freshman Taylor Lucas-Howard, sophomore Nicole Maybell, senior Rickeysha White, senior Tamia Green and senior Donaiyah Bolton.

“My role on the team is making sure that the ball is getting up and down the court,” Gadison said. “We are a total team, and I am just one part of that team.”
