GREENVILLE, Mississippi - It is with great sorrow that we announce the transition of Alfolonia (Apolona) M Moore on October 3, 2025, at DRMC, Greenville at 95 years old. She was born on July 18, 1930, in Scott, Mississippi to Walter and Elizabeth Matthews. Alfolonia was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to many.
She attended the public schools of Greenville and graduated from Coleman High School in 1948. In 1949 she married the love of her life Charles (Charlie) L. Moore who preceded her in death. That union produced 5 children: Charles L. Moore, Gregory L. Moore, twins Iris A. Moore Mcgee and Janis Y. Moore, and Stanley L. Moore.
After making sure her last child was safely established in school, Alfolonia enrolled in college to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi Vocational College (now known as Mississippi Valley State University). She continued her education at Delta State College where she received a Master of Education in Elementary Education.
Mrs. Moore, as she was known by her students, became a passionate first grade teacher in the Greenville Public Schools system. It is said that parents requested her specifically as their children’s teacher. Mrs. Moore’s own children were frequently approached by former students who had such fond memories of her, with many claiming to be her favorite. In fact, she was attended to during her final hours by a former student who only remembered two of her teachers.
A long-life dedicated member of Mercy Seat Baptist Church, Mrs. Moore served faithfully as an elder of the church, worked in different voluntary positions and worked with the youth during Vacation Bible School.
Alfolonia, as she was known to friends, was known affectionately for her kind heart, sweetness, sense of humor, and lovely smile. Anyone who knew her knew that her passion was her flower garden, especially her daylilies. Even when she could no longer care for her garden, she directed her children on how to care for it. She would then sit in her picture window and admire its loveliness as she waved to passing neighbors.
Alfolonia leaves to mourn her, her devoted children Charles L. Moore, II of Cordova, Tennessee, Gregory L. Moore of Cypress, Texas, Iris Moore McGee (her devoted son-in-law Carl) of Greenville, Janis Y. Moore of Greenville and Stanley L. Moore of Greenville. She was also a loving grandmother to Carlton J. McGee (Kincyl) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Irene A. McGee of Meridianville, Alabama, Jessicah Holloway (Katie) of San Antonio, Texas, Alexandra Landing of Flowood, Aja Buckhalter of Mt. Carmel, Indiana and Brooklyn Moore of Little Rock. Alfolonia leaves behind special nieces Corliss Norris of Greenville, Rochelle Elaine (Lonnie) of Metcalfe, Pamela Moore of Greenville, and Michelle Moore of Greenville and a special nephew John Freeman (Yolanda) of Albuquerque, New Mexico and a host of other nieces and nephews. She will be especially missed by her close friend Barbara Bacon Quinn whom she has known since seventh grade.
Her family would like to give special recognition to her neighbors across the street, The Johnson Boys (as she affectionately called them), for their unselfish devotion to her safety.
Service is scheduled for October 18th, 11 a.m., at Mercy Baptist Church, 427 Redbud, Greenville.
A viewing has not been determined.
In honor of Mrs. Moore’s love of flowers and her colorful personality her children are requesting attendees to wear colorful attire. Men may wear colorful ties and women may wear the colors of flowers.
