After an early morning shooting saw the death of Alex Foster in Greenville and recent weeks of violence throughout the city, Mayor Errick Simmons is calling a special meeting of the city council to consider curfews and a state of emergency in the city.
After a vote of the Greenville City Council, effective immediately, a citywide curfew will be implemented from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, until further notice. This curfew is necessary to stabilize conditions, support law enforcement efforts, and protect the innocent from further harm. A special emphasis will be placed on juvenile safety and parental accountability. Additionally, all nightclubs and similar late-night establishments must cease operations by midnight, with no patrons allowed on the premises after that time.
To ensure full community engagement and citywide coordination, I have called a Special Call Meeting of the Greenville City Council for today at 4:15 PM. At this meeting, we will discuss the full scope of emergency measures, reinforce our support for local law enforcement, coordination with state and federal agencies, and outline steps for long-term violence prevention and community healing.
Foster was a former St. Joe standout who signed a scholarship to play football at Baylor University.
