After several months of advertising for the position, the Mississippi State University Extension Service of Washington County will soon have an ag-agent on board.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 during Monday’s regular meeting to approve the hiring of a candidate recommended by Jennifer Russell, Extension IV for MSU Extension-Washington County.
“We have been advertising for a while now for this ag-agent position and we’ve finally got someone,” said Russell, noting the candidate being new to the role, but qualified.
With the candidate being a resident of Lake Village and not Washington County, Russell sought permission from the BOS to still hire her.
As it is not required by MSU for such an agent to reside in the county of employment, the BOS proceeded with voting in approval of Russell’s hire.
An agricultural or ag-agent is responsible for providing leadership and coordination for the county extension educational effort in Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, 4-H Youth Development and Enterprise and Community Resource Development.
The BOS also granted Russell approval for a budget modification in order to supplement funds needed for the extension service’s food demonstration which is conducted throughout the year at various county schools.
