In the end, the record will show that the Greenville Christian School football team had its season come to an end Friday night with a 30-22 home loss to Centreville in the first round of the MAIS Class 3A state playoff.
But, that final score will not tell the whole story about how hard the Greenville Christian School Saints fought all season long or how hard they fought in their loss Friday.
Every time the Saints seemed on the ropes Friday night, they seemed to make another play to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Saints’ final score of the game came with 9:36 left. It was set up by a fumble recovery by GCS’s Antonio Moore inside the 22-yard line, and it was completed when Will riley caught a 30-yard pass from quarterback Mike Mohead.
“The kids played hard the entire night, but tonight just was not our night” Greenville Christian School coach Jon Reed McLendon said.
The Saints concluded their season by winning four of their last six games.
After losing in the championship game last year to St. Joseph, Centreville (5-6) is hoping to make another run in this year’s state playoffs. The Tigers scored the final touchdown of the game of a 15-yard run with three minutes left.
The Saints (4-6) were not done, however. Greenville Christian School’s Marcus Anderson completed a 50-yard pass the GCS’s Lawson Stokes in a play that ended at the 20-yard line.
In the closing moments of the second half, Stokes caught the second touchdown of the game on a 14-yard pass completion from Anderson.
“We gave ourselves some chances and that is a credit to how hard this team worked,” Coach McLendon said.
Greenville Christian School’s Marlon Palmer recovered a fumble in the first quarter to set up the Saints’ first touchdown of the game, which came moments later when JaMichael Short raced into the endzone from 33 yards out.
