Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, Leland’s Christmas on Deer Creek got off to a cold and wet start, the same cold snap and downpour that postponed Greenville’s Christmas Parade, saw Leland gearing up for what one city official said was going to be the best one yet. The parade rumbled through its route with Mike Palasini Racing who had a car in the parade along with Santa and Mrs. Claus, floats, fire trucks, and every cool-looking vehicle the city owns.
Board of Supervisors Mala Brooks who calls Leland home, said, “It was wonderful, the turnout was amazing, I won’t speak numbers, but people from Madison County, Sunflower County, and all over Washington County went to Leland to see this wonderful event, But the real hero of the day is Sherry Smythe, whose vision for Leland’s Christmas on Deer Creek is becoming a reality.”
Sherry Smythe’s name comes up a lot when talking to residents and event coordinators, “It’s like walking through a Hallmark Christmas card” said Mary Anne Brocato, “ She has a vision for it every year, but visions don’t just happen, people like our logistics guru Mark King are how the visions become reality.”
The event went on until 9 p.m. A family from Pennsylvania, who was visiting relatives in Moorhead said, “This place and its people are full of the kind of charm you can only get from a small town like this one, our family will be coming here every year from now on.”
