A series of shootings early Sunday morning left one man dead and several Grenada residents, including a child, injured as shots rang out all over town.
According to Grenada Police Chief George Douglas, the department is currently investigating four separate shootings that occurred after midnight on Jan. 28, in multiple locations within the city limits.
The first shooting occurred at approximately 2:32 a.m. in the 800 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
“In that shooting, police arrived on scene and discovered that a victim identified as 36-year-old Charles Santez Coffey was shot and killed,” Chief Douglas said. “The shooting occurred on the outside of a dwelling in the area of businesses.”
Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene by Grenada County Coroner Douglas Yates.
GPD officers received a second call of a shooting at approximately 3:46 a.m. in the 500 block of Union Street.
“In that shooting, an adult female victim identified as Jahmila Frost was shot once while inside a residence,” Chief Douglas said. “Police preliminarily determined that the shooter(s) fired from the outside.”
Frost was treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center-Grenada for her injury as a result of the shooting and survived.
A third call of a shooting was received at approximately 3:52 a.m.
“In that shooting, a 9-year-old female was shot in the 800 block of Washington Street while lying in bed with her mother inside an apartment,” Chief Douglas said. “The investigation determined that the shooter(s) were outside at the time shots were fired.”
The child was also treated at UMMC-Grenada and survived her injuries.
GPD officers received the fourth and final call of a shooting at approximately 4:24 a.m. in the 400 block of Gerard Street.
“In that shooting, the police discovered that an adult male identified as 24-year-old Joseph Terrell Thompson had been shot while inside an apartment,” Chief Douglas said. “The preliminary investigation revealed that numerous windows were shot out of the residence from the outside.”
GPD investigators believe the four shootings are connected.
“Following initial investigations, officers believe that all four shootings are related in some manner,” Chief Douglas concluded. “However, further investigation is warranted to thoroughly determine the relation.”
Officers also determined through gathering evidence that the suspect(s) were shooting fully automatic weapons, according to Chief Douglas.
The motives for the shootings remain under investigation and no arrests have been made in connection with the shootings.
