HOLLANDALE — A fatal shooting in Hollandale this weekend claimed the life of a 13-year-old male and has left a 17-year-old male behind bars.
At about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, officers with the Hollandale Police Department were dispatched after receiving a call in reference to reports of shots fired and a child hanging out of a car in the 700 block of Sherman Street.
Upon arriving, officers discovered the body of a 13-year-old male from Hollandale who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
According to HPD Chief Marcus Davis, the suspect — a 17-year-old male from Metcalfe — had fled the scene, but both of their parents and others were inside of the house enjoying a family and friends gathering.
“But those two had been left outside and whatever transpired between them led the 17-year-old male to allegedly shoot the 13-year-old in the head with a 9mm long rifle,” Davis said.
According to Davis, the suspect found the weapon in his father’s vehicle.
He was arrested by officers with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Mallard Cove Apartments after fleeing the scene. He has been charged with first degree murder.
The 13-year-old was transported to Delta Health System - The Medical Center by Pafford EMS and later pronounced deceased by the Washington County Coroner’s Office.
Davis said further on the incident, “At this time, we don’t know the reasoning behind all of it or how it happened, but enough information has been gathered to charge the 17-year-old with murder in the first degree.”
The suspect is currently being held at the Al Rankins Correctional Facility and has a bond hearing set for Tuesday.
