A still yet unknown person crept through the darkness late at night last week at a house in Gawmyn Park.
The burglar rattled the back door at 11:46 p.m. April 20 and quickly fired two shots into the house, activating the alarm.
The trespasser later fired a third shot from a position in the back yard, farther away from the house.
The now wanted person escaped into the night before police arrived at the house just six minutes from when the alarm sounded.
What the person left behind was a dead dog and a family whose trust in the safety of their home has been shattered.
The family’s three children, luckily, were asleep in their beds far above the shooting. The sounds never roused them.
The husband and wife went into quick action, as did a neighbor, but no perpetrator was found.
While the alarm system and police did their jobs quickly, there’s still no suspect in the attempted robbery. In fact, there could be more than just robbery charges since shots were fired into an occupied house and an animal was killed.
Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said the motive of the shooting is unknown.
But the home robbery wasn’t the only criminal activity surrounding this single family.
Less than one week later, their business on Highway 1 saw a group of four men attempt to rob parts from a vehicle parked on the business property. They smashed a window and dug around inside the truck.
It has been a more-than-regular occurrence at the business.
The four men were seen on a neighboring business’ camera system pointing a 40-caliber handgun at the door. A spent bullet casing was found on the driveway in front of the building.
The family and some friends have come together to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot into the home on N. Gamwyn Drive.
They are asking anyone with information regarding the case to call the Greenville Police Department at 662-378-1515, Crimestoppers at 662-378-TIPS or Sgt. Eric Sutton at 662-822-2874.
