Police are investigating the death of a man who was found this morning with gunshot wounds to the face.
At 7:42 a.m. Friday, May 14, officers with the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of North Harvey Street in reference to a welfare concern.
Once on scene, officers found a 21-year-old black male who was identified as Sylvester Hanes, lying in a vacant lot.
“Emergency medical personnel responded and also the Washington County Coroner,” Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said.
Hanes, who appeared to have been shot in the face, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Investigators are actively following up any leads on this incident,” Merchant said.
This is the city of Greenville’s ninth homicide this year.
