INDIANOLA, Mississippi - Dorothy Townsend Leach, 87, of Indianola, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Dorothy was born on December 3, 1938, in Attala County, to Horace and Hattie Bell Townsend. She was raised in Tallahatchie County and graduated from West Tallahatchie High School. Dorothy married James Leach, and together they made their home in Indianola. She worked at Ludlow in Indianola for several years and later worked at Wal-Mart in Indianola for many years prior to her retirement. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and cooking. She loved country music and her vacations in Branson, Missouri.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Hattie Bell Townsend; husband, James R. Leach; son, Mark Leach; two brothers, Travis Townsend and Ray Townsend; and one sister, Norma Jean Burchfield.
She is survived by her son, Michael Leach (Lisa) of Indianola; one brother, Jimmy Townsend of Drew; two sisters, Linda Townsend Weeks of Grenada and Helen Townsend Kunefke (Wade) of Port Arthur, Texas; and one grandson, Austin Leach of Indianola.
Visitation was held Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. The funeral service began at 2 p.m. with Jimmy Morris officiating. Due to inclement weather conditions, burial will be postponed. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
