The announcement was made on Friday with Brent earning four nominations, a tie for the most nominations by any artist this year.
“I am thrilled,” Brent said after learning the news on Friday, “my husband Bob and I wrote all of the songs together. We hoped the fans would like the new album, but this is such a wonderful surprise.”
Brent’s four 2025 Blues Music Awards nominations include:
- Song of the Year – “Watch the World Go By”
- Traditional Blues Album – Getaway Blues
- Traditional Blues Female Artist – (Koko Taylor Award)
- Instrumentalist – Piano – (Pinetop Perkins Piano Player)
Produced and arranged by Brent’s husband Bob Dowell, Getaway Blues is Brent’s sixth studio album and was released on Yellow Dog Records in June 2024. The nine original songs feature Brent on keys and vocals joined by Dowell on bass, with guitarist Rob Updegraff, and drummer Pat Levett. The album was recorded by Benedic Lamdin in London, England, mixed by Grammy winner Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves in Memphis, Tennessee, and mastered by Kim Rosen at Knack Mastering in Ringwood, New Jersey.
The Blues Music Awards recognize the best in blues each year and are awarded in 25 categories. Winners are determined by voting members of the Blues Foundation which include artists, industry professionals and music fans from all over the world. Anyone interested may join the Blues Foundation and vote in this year’s awards. Voting remains open until February 28, 2025, 11:59pm CST.
Brent is joined by two other Mississippi nominees in the Blues Music Awards this year. Grammy nominee Mr. Sipp, is nominated for both B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Contemporary Blues Male Artist; and Grammy winner Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, is nominated for Instrumentalist - Guitar.
Brent has eleven prior Blues Music Awards nominations, most recently in 2022 for Instrumentalist – Piano (Pinetop Perkins Piano Player), a trophy she won in 2011. In 2010 Brent won both the Acoustic Blues Artist and Acoustic Blues Album awards for her debut album on Yellow Dog Records, Mississippi Number One.
