Local police are investigating what caused the death of an elderly man this weekend.
At 1:39 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, officers with the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Oak Drive for an unresponsive person.
Emergency medical personnel and the Washington County Coroner were called to the scene, where the victim, a 70-year-old white male, was pronounced dead.
The victims was identified as William Rochelle.
Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said investigators with the Greenville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are actively investigating the death.
“An autopsy will be performed on the subject and we will update the information when it becomes available,” Merchant said.
Merchant said police cannot comment why the Rochelle’s death required an autopsy, but that a preliminary autopsy report should soon be released.
