A group of pilots hoping to encourage others to pursue an interest in aviation are coming to the Greenville Mid-Delta Airport Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The Arkansas Thunderbirds chapter of the Black Pilots of America will host an Aviation Day fly-in free of charge.
The event will feature static display aircraft. Chapter members will be sharing their aviation stories and providing information on career and business opportunities in the aviation field.
Area students and other interested parties are encouraged to attend, learn more about the aviation field and how they can become a part of it.
Sam Washington, airport director, requested permission at the April 16 city council meeting to use the airport for the event
“The is something we want to do ourselves to help expose the next generation to aviation and maybe show some of those who have never been to airport to see it,” said Washington, who is a member of the aviation organization.
Washington said event details would be shared with area schools and institutions of higher learning in the Delta.
“This is open to anyone and it is free,” he said. “We want to share our passion and hopefully encourage students to pursue a career in the felid. It’s fun for us to share what we do.”
Washington told council members STEM programs are helpful to students when choosing to pursue a career in aviation and explaining the importance of education in a real world setting can leave a lasting impression.
