The Greenville Fire Department along with Car Tunes Inc., Greenville Weston High School Class of 1998 and Carlos Brothers, of Concessions Unlimited, have partnered to organize fundraisers for Senior Captain Kendrix Washington.
Washington has been battling cancer since February and the fundraisers are set to help assist with any ongoing medical expenses. He has been a respected member of the Greenville Fire Department for over 11 years.
Chief Ruben Brown reached out to the city council and posted information on the department’s Facebook page asking for prayers.
“Cancer in this field is a very serious topic,” Brown stated. “We have been educating our firefighters on this issues through conferences and seminars, so when Captain Washington was diagnosed with cancer we had to jump on aboard and put our training to use.”

So far, Car Tunes has raised more than $1,000 to benefit Washington and will continue to raffle items with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Washington.
“We wanted to extend a hand and assist in Captain Washington’s medical expenses,” said Kimberly Turner, owner of Car Tunes Inc.. “My husband Robert is the battalion chief at the fire department and he knows the background of Captain Washington because they have worked alongside each other for the last 11 years. It was only right that we stepped up and helped.”
GWHS Class of 1998 is doing a booth drive at three locations in Greenville. The Greenville Fire Department will set up the booths and collect money at each locations. Hwy 1 and 82, Main and Bowman Boulevard and Reed Road. and Colorado are the three location sites.
“Kendrix Washington is our classmate and he graduated with us,” said Rochita Merrill, VP for Class of 1998. “Most of us have been together since elementary so since we are such a close knit class, we wanted to come together as one to help with the expenses. We are one and we will stand with Kendrix as one.”
Carlos Brothers, of Concessions Unlimited, will be assisting the fire department at the BBQ Lunch Fundraiser. The event will be held at Fire Station #1, 532 Central St., May 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The plates are $8 and will include chicken, 2 sides, dessert and soda.
“I really appreciate all the love shown towards me,” Washington said. “When you show love to others and try to do right by people, the same love and support is shown back.”
Washington stated that he is doing well and the treatments are working. He wants to extend a thank you to everyone who has been praying and assisting with his expenses. No good deed has gone unnoticed.
