Reed Road is nearing completion, with the majority of surface work completed.
Mark Hooker, county engineer, told the Washington County Board of Supervisors Monday that surface work should be completed early this week.
“We now have the biggest part of road covered,” Hooker said Monday. “We should have the rest of the surface complete today and will need to wait 10 days to stripe it.”
Hooker said weather conditions will determine how quickly the project will be complete.
“I’m hopeful it will be finished by the end of the month,” Hooker said.
In mid-April, Hooker told the board the Reed Road project, which began in January, was ahead of schedule.
State Aid funds were transfered to the project after additional areas were found to be in need of repair.
Supervisors approved transfering the requested $200,00 leaving a ballance of approximately $200,000 of State Air funds. The additional needed repairs brought the cost of the Reed Road project to $1.5 million.
Initially, the expected time line for completion was July.
The rehabilitation project is the first significant repairs to Reed Road since 1981.
Plans to repair Reed Road have been in the works since July 2017, when Greenville City Council members offered to contribute $300,000 toward resurfacing a 1-mile stretch of the road from Canal No. 9 to Raceway Road. Initial estimates were $1.6 million to dig up the asphalt, repair the roadbed and lay down a new surface.
The city’s contribution was matched with the Washington County Board of Supervisors Office of State Aid funds. In September, supervisors awarded the project to the lowest bidder, APAC Mississippi for $1.36 million.
Reed Road’s initial project start date was Dec. 10, but rain delayed the start until January.
