Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons announces Gerri Green Day to be held on Friday, April 19, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at City Hall. The City of Greenville and the Washington County MSU Alumni Chapter will celebrate former Greenville High School and Mississippi State University’s football player Gerri Green for his hard work, dedication, leadership, and service as a student athlete during his time at MSU.
“Growing up a kid in Greenville I never thought that one day I would have my own day,” Green said. “It’s an accomplishment that means a great deal to me but I can’t take all the credit for it. First I have to thank God for all the blessings that he has given me . Next my family for all the support that they have given me every step of the way. Last but not least the city of Greenville for molding me into the man I am today. The people of the community who have impacted my life and given me keys to success. There would be no Gerri Green without Greenville.”
This event is an open community celebration to honor the achievements of Gerri Green, thank him for representing the city in a positive light, and to show him that he has made the City of Greenville proud. “Gerri Green is a living example of the good that comes from Greenville,” said Simmons. “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Gerri Green represents both the size and the fight of what Greenville offers the world in this mental and physical toughness in Gerri. We are proud.
Gerri Green’s mother said the day is a testament to her son’s hard work.
“As his mother, I am proud of the accomplishments he has will continue to achieve. Gerri has shown me and his brother that faith, hard work, and determination will pay off. He is proof that Greenville and Greenville Public Schools produce greatness,” Valerie Green said.
Lea Margreat said, “The Washington County Alumni Chapter of Mississippi State University is pleased to partner with the City of Greenville to recognize Gerri and honor him for his leadership and outstanding contributions as a student-athlete. From being named senior team captain to his selection to serve on the SEC leadership council while earning his degree in agribusiness, Gerri has represented his hometown with the utmost class. We look forward to hearing Gerri’s name called next week in the NFL draft and watching to see what the future holds for this outstanding young man.”
Coach Quintarus McCray said, “I think this is a wonderful thing the city of Greenville is doing for Gerri. He is a great guy and will give you the shirt off his back. He deserves this recognition and I am so proud of the man he has become.”
