Doing what they love and managing to give back is a plus in the eyes of local organization Beyond the Hardwood.
Beyond the Hardwood is hosting their third annual Christmas Basketball Camp: Christmas Presents Giveaway this Saturday at the YMCA, 1688 Fairgrounds Road.
The event will be from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. for youth 5-13 years of age.
The purpose of this event is to provide a joyful and merry event during the Christmas season for the youth in the community.
Glenn Ford, one of the founders of Beyond the Hardwood, said this event will allow children to receive basketball instruction from former and current college athletes.
“It will also provide a bonding experience for our community during the holiday season,” Ford said.
The Christmas camp will include basketball skill work, basketball games and a gift giveaway to every child in attendance. There is a $5 fee for every camper. Donations, whether it’s new or slightly-used toys, electronics and toys, are being accepted through Thursday.
During the camp, every camper will also be fed as well as given a gift.
Anthony Evans, one of the founders of Beyond the Hardwood, said as they go into year three of their Christmas camp, they look forward to continuing to do it in the future.
“This event is something that we look forward to doing. We are helping the youth learn more techniques and skills about a sport that is near and dear to our hearts. We just want to instill in them the things we know so they can go farther,” Evans said.
Ford said basketball has allowed him to travel to some amazing places and build some friendships that will last a lifetime.
“I owe it to the game and my city to give back and inspire these young boys and girls in a positive way,” Ford said.

About Beyond the Hardwood
Beyond The Hardwood is an organization that was established in 2016 by local residents Glenn Ford, Anthony Evans and Nick Porter. The three men have been playing basketball since grade school and they decided to use that platform as a way to give back to the youth in the community.
“We wanted to provide our youth with the necessary skills and resources needed to be better players and individuals,” Ford said. “As well as hosting camps, we do basketball skills training all year around.”
