Carmen Williams has a lot of responsibility as the lone senior on the Greenville High School volleyball team this season.
Not only does Carmen have to play the position of outside hitter, one of the main positions on her team; but, Carmen also has the responsibility of leading the Lady Hornets.
The Greenville High School volleyball team has 13 sophomores on its team this year. These young players have given total effort this season, Carmen said, but they still have a lot to learn if they wish to one day become champions.
Through her leadership and encouragement, Carmen is helping each one of these young players become the best players they can be.
“My job is to teach these kids to be great volleyball players,” Carmen said. “Many of them were scared of being hit by a volleyball before they joined the team. And, now they have become great players and great teammates.”
Greenville High School volleyball coach Nick Seymour said Carmen’s leadership has been essential in helping make the Greenville volleyball program the best that it can be.
“Carmen is the stimulus that helps keep us going,” Coach Seymour said. “She helps teach the younger players what it takes to be great at this sport. Her experience is crucial in making us be the best that we can be.”
Coach Seymour has been coaching volleyball for 34 years, and each year he said brings a new challenge and obstacle. Volleyball is a sport played by only three teams in the Delta, so getting high school girls to try out for the sport is the first obstacle.
“Once they start, they all seem to stick with it,” Coach Seymour said.
The volleyball team will have its senior night Oct. 8 against Holmes Central.
“We have worked hard and have gotten better,” Carmen said. “We hope fans of Greenville High School come out to support us.”
