The Greenville High School baseball team may have had its season come to an end last month because of the coronavirus, but players on the Hornets are still reaping the rewards from all the hard work they put in over the last few seasons.
Greenville seniors Kameron Reed and Donovan Shead both committed to attend Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas.
Reed and Shead are now the fourth and fifth baseball players from Greenville High to move on to play at the next level. Greenville’s Ty’Mitchell McCollough and Ervin Simmons both signed with East Central Community College this spring, while Aaron Coats had previously signed with Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
“This is big for our program,” Greenville coach Jeffrey Jones said. “I can’t recall it ever happening here before. This is not just about sports. It is much bigger than that. It is about young men getting a chance to continue their education.”
Shead, a first baseman, and Reed, a catcher are both solid defensive players who have also been a force at the plate over the last few seasons.
“This did not just happen. Both Kameron and Donovan worked hard and earned this,” Coach Jones said. “Their college coach is getting two good players who are also both high character people.”
Because of the current pandemic, Neither Shead nor Reed have visited their future campus yet.
Coach Jones said he received a phone call from a friend and fellow coach who told him about the baseball scholarships that were available at Mountain View. It did not take long for Mountain View head coach Malcolm Walker to be persuaded by Coach Jones that Reed and Shead would be good fits for his college team,” Coach Jones said.
“He is getting a catcher and a first baseman who can help his team.”
