In his second season as the starting quarterback for the Greenville High School football team, Ty’Mitchell McCollough is feeling more comfortable at the position.
McCollough, this week’s Planters Bank Player of the Week, looked poised and confident Saturday night during Greenville’s 28-20 road victory over Gentry.
McCollough threw for 315 total yards Saturday. He also threw two touchdown passes, one to Errick Simmons Jr. and one to Ervin Simmons. McCollough rushed in a touchdown for Greenville’s first score of the game as well. Coach Quintarus McCray said McCollough’s first touchdown was crucial to his team’s confidence.
“I think that opening drive meant a lot,” Qunitarus McCray said. “It showed what type of character we are building with this team.”
McCollough grew up loving baseball, and even took two years off from football because of it. He is the shortstop of the Greenville High School baseball team, and has always had a strong arm.
This year McCollough can launch a football more than 65 yards, but he said his improvement at quarterback has more to do with the mental approach to the game.
“I am learning how to read the defenses more, and I am learning where I need to put the football,” McCollough said. “Being a good quarterback has more to do with your mental skills than with your physical skills.”
McCollough said he hopes to lead the Hornets to another victory this Friday when Greenville travels to take on Clarksdale. The Hornets have not beaten the Wildcats since 2005, but McCollough said he is not going to let history have any impact on the present.
“We believe we can win, and we are going to go down to Clarksdale Friday and believe that we can do it,” McCollough said. “This team is like brothers, and we are always going to give it everything that we have.”
