Holiday spirit is in the air, or at least on the water, in the City of Leland. Although Christmas on Deer Creek festivities have been canceled this year due to COVID-19, folks can still head over to Leland this weekend to wave at Santa and admire the lit floats along Deer Creek.
Leland Chamber Director Mary Anne Brocato said they did not want to host an event where people would be encouraged to gather in a large group.
In year’s past, Christmas on Deer Creek festivities have taken place on the Rainbow Connection Bridge and would end with a special arrival from Santa Claus.
This year, the Chamber is hosting a drive by and wave at Santa from 5:30-6 p.m. Saturday.
“Santa will not get off his float and we will not be taking any pictures with Santa,” Brocato said, noting the float lights will be turned on at dusk.
To see Santa and give him a jolly wave, motorists will need to drive down South East Deer Creek Drive and head toward downtown Leland.
“If you turned at the Kermit exhibit toward downtown Leland, you would be in the right spot. Of course, you could see him from all directions,” she said. “They are going to circle for 30 minutes from the site of their float to the bridge and back.”
The Christmas floats along Deer Creek will stay out for people to enjoy through the end of the month.
