The Washington School Lady Generals kept fighting the whole night, and when Lela Signa banked in a 3-pointer with 20 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game, it looked like their scrappiness might just pay off.
But, their opponents from Magnolia Heights would not get rattled as the Lady Chiefs made all four of their next free throws to win the game, 39-34.
“I thought we played really well,” Washington School coach Yvette McPherson said. “I think that they made so many free throws at the end of the game and that was the difference. When we had to foul them to get the ball back, they made their free throws.”
The Lady Generals, who were celebrating senior night, had the lead for much of the game. They led by three points at halftime, and two points at the end of the third quarter. It wasn’t until the five minute mark in the fourth quarter when the Lady Chiefs took to lead for good
Meg Giachelli scored nine points to lead Washington School, and played with the same toughness that she has been playing with all year.
“Meg rebounded very well,” Coach McPherson said. “She is a tough player and gives it 100 percent all the time.”
Maddie Jones scored six points for the Lady Gens. Brantley Nimrod scored eight. Louise Word scored six.
Washington School will close out its regular season next Tuesday at Pillow.
“There are still some things we need to work on,” Coach McPherson said. “We definitely have gotten better throughout the season.”
