Omar Emmons, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, may be new to his St. Joseph teammates, but this season he has shown the leadership qualities of a long time veteran teammate.
Emmons, a senior Greenwood High School transfer, rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns in his team’s road victory over Central Hinds Academy last Friday. Emmons, who is platooning at quarterback with C.J. Moore as starter Mekhi Norris recovers from a shoulder injury, also threw for 57 yards and a touchdown in the Irish win which moved their record to 5-1 this season.
“Omar has so many weapons,” St. Joseph head coach John Baker said. “He can play running back, wide receiver and quarterback. On defense, he is also great player as a safety.”
Emmons has rushed for 581 yards this season and seven touchdowns, and Coach Baker said his biggest impact is helping lead his young teammates on the sidelines.
“He has come in and filled a leadership role that we needed,” Baker said. “He really does a fine job of helping his younger teammates learn how to become better players.”
One of the younger players Emmons is helping to lead is sophomore C.J. Moore who completed 13 of his 20 passes against Central Hinds. St. Joseph Kaleb Lockett leads the Irish with 420 receiving yards this season.
Humphreys County game called off
Due to COVID-19, St. Joseph’s home game Friday against Humphreys County has been called off. The Irish are tentatively scheduled to get back on the field on Oct. 9 at Pillow Academy.
In a Facebook message to St. Joseph students, parents and faculty, St. Joseph principal Craig Mandolini said the school had multiple positive cases of COVID-19 in the high school, but zero cases in the elementary or junior high schools.
“These students were all on campus Friday and we were not informed until this weekend about the cases,” Mandolini wrote. “With extreme caution, we are going to push ALL students, seventh through twelfth, to virtual for a two-week quarantine 9/28-10/9. This will help stop the spread any further and allow everyone to start fresh back at school on October 12.”
