The City of Greenville Water Department this week began implementing a walk-up payment center for customers who wish to pay their utility bill in person as City Hill is still closed to the general public.
Water and Utility Department Director Jessie Whitley talked about the benefit of making such an accommodation to better serve customers while still dealing with the unpredictability of COVID-19 (coronavirus).
“This will be in conjunction with the drive through service we have and the drop box,” he said.
The walk up payment center is located on Shelby Street, in the vicinity of the drive thru of City Hall and is operated within a tent that states, “Pay your water bill here.”
“There’s a window where you can just walk up and have interactions with the staff from there, and we can take care of that business without having them come in,” Whitley said.
When asked how customers took to the new accommodation on the first day, which was Monday, he said, “It was great, we had lots of business. We had a lot of walk up customers and we got a chance to talk with customers and interact like we normally do.”
Whitley also highlighted the idea of people just being pleased to get out of their vehicles to come and say “hello.”
The walk up payment center will operate during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
