A three-vehicle wreck at one of Greenville’s busiest intersections sent six people, including four children, to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
Greenville Police Department Assistant Chief Michael Merchant said officers were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 82 and Raceway Road at 3:30 p.m. in reference to a three-vehicle accident.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered an 18-wheeler truck transporting corn, a Nissan passenger car and a Chevy SUV that were all involved in the wreck,” he said, noting emergency medical personnel responded and immediately began treating injuries.
Based on the preliminary investigation, Merchant said the 18-wheeler, driven by a 46-year-old black male, was traveling westbound, the Nissan, driven by a 63-year-old black female and carrying four children between the ages of 5 and 9, was traveling north and the Chevy, driven by a 49-year-old black male, was traveling eastbound when the wreck happened.
During the wreck, the front of the 18-wheeler hit the Chevy and pushed it into the front of V8 Cuts Salon & Spa on U.S. 82.
Everyone except the driver of the Chevy were transported to Delta Regional Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition.
Donna Shamoun, sister of the owner of V8 Cuts, said it was a ‘miracle’ no one was injured.
Based on the camera’s surveillance footage, Shamoun said it appears the 18-wheeler was driving too fast and ran the red light.
“You can see it on the film, plain as day,” she said. “We had just gotten an 80-year-old client into her wheelchair. Had to literally grab her and drag her to the back before that truck slammed into the window and busted it out. It’s a miracle to God no one was hurt.”
Merchant said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
