History was made Friday night as the O’Bannon High School Lady Waves clinched their first district championship in three decades with a dramatic 26-25 victory over the Northside Lady Gators. The win not only secured the district title but also marked the Lady Waves’ 15th victory of the season—the most in recent memory for the program.
In a game where neither team led by more than two points, the intensity never wavered. With eight seconds left on the clock, coach Torroine Carter called one last timeout to draw up a play to decide the game. With the final seconds ticking away, junior guard Trumyah McCullough seized the moment. Isolating at the top of the key, she drove past her defender and finished at the rim as the buzzer sounded, sealing the championship for O’Bannon. McCullough led all scorers with 16 points, delivering when her team needed her most.
The Lady Waves also got a key contribution from Tiana Knox, who knocked down two crucial three-pointers in the first half. Every possession mattered in the tightly contested battle, but the Lady Waves’ determination and grit carried them to victory.
“Those girls worked hard, and they believed,” said an emotional Coach Carter after the win. “They’ve worked, they’ve endured, and they’ve conquered. Proud is an understatement.”
With the district championship in hand, the Lady Waves now set their sights on the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs. They will host Water Valley at home on Monday, February 10th in the first round, hoping to continue their historic run.
For a team that has battled adversity and fought to restore a winning tradition, Friday night’s victory was more than just a championship—it was a statement. The Lady Waves are back, and they’re not done yet.
