INDIANOLA — In the past, the Hornets may have folded once the Gentry High School football team rolled down the field and scored the first touchdown of the game Saturday night at Gentry High School.
But, on this night, the Greenville High School football team did not lie down. They got right back on the field and had an answer of their own in the Hornets’ 28-20 victory. Quarterback Ty”Mitchell McCollough scored on a 10-yard rush for the first of four Hornet touchdowns in the matchup of old rivals.
“I think that opening drive meant a lot,” first year Greenville High School coach Qunitarus McCray said. “It showed what type of character we are building with this team.”
The Greenville offense stood out Saturday both on the ground and through the air.
McCollough threw for 315 total yards Saturday, and Greenville running back Aaron Coats helped lead the Hornet rushing attack to a 215-yard night.
The Hornets led the game 20-8 at halftime, and put the game away in the fourth quarter when Aaron Coats scored a rushing touchdown.
Errick Simmons Jr. and Ervin Simmons scored the other two touchdowns for the Hornets. Errick Simmons’ touchdown came from 65 yards out.
Coach McCray said his team was pleased with the victory, but he believes his players will not get ahead of themselves.
Greenville’s next game is Friday night on the road against Clarksdale. Last season, the Hornets picked up their only win of the season against Gentry before falling at home to Clarksdale, 47-14.
“We set our goals to be one day and one game at a time,” Coach McCray said.
On a personal level, Coach McCray said it was a dream come true to coach his first regular season game for his alma mater.
“It was an unreal feeling being out there knowing that I was coaching at Greenville,” Coach McCray said.
