The football season is still more than two months away, but this doesn’t mean that St. Joseph star wide receiver Jerrian ‘Stank’ King isn’t hard at work getting better.
During Thursday afternoon’s 7-on-7 drills at St. Joseph, King was flying through the air making one nice catch after another from quarterback CJ Moore.
“CJ and I have been having been working together just about every day,” King said. “Our goal is to win a state championship. We came just a little bit short last year, but now we are more mature and ready to go.”
St. Joseph head coach John Baker said he was pleased with effort of his players during the 7-on-7 drills, where the Irish competed against Riverside High School and Indianola Academy.
“We are ahead of the game right now,” Coach Baker said. “The sky is the limit for this team. We only lost four players from last year’s team, so we should be pretty good.”
On the other end of the field, Riverside High School first year coach Tavares Johnson Jr. was also liking what he saw from his players.
“We are trying to get the guys to transition into doing things the right way. They are coming together, and we are pushing them to get better.
“This job is harder than I thought it would be. This title comes with a lot of responsibility, many responsibilities that I didn’t even know about. But at the same time this is what I have been shooting for and I am trying to enjoy this ride,” Coach Johnson said.
The St. Joseph Fighting Irish and the Riverside Bulldogs open the season against each other on Aug. 26.
“We are trying to do a little bit of scouting, but mostly we are just out here to get in shape and work on ourselves,” Coach Johnson said. “Coach Baker gave me some first year coaching advise which I really appreciate. We may be coaching against each other, but we don’t have to be enemies.”
