A “Juneteenth Celebration” is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Schelben Park lakefront.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Greenville Coalition will host its flag raising ceremony and “Remember I am FREE” program at 9 a.m. at Grenville City Hall.
Immediately following the program, the community will march to Schelben Park to share in a Juneteenth Celebration with the local non-profit organization MyPreemieandMe’s ”Battle of the Chefs” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Schelben Park Lakefront.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be entertainment, complimentary giveaways, raffles and activities for children.
“This celebration is to commemorate Juneteenth and the Tulsa race massacre —the day slaves were set free in the U.S. and the day mobs of white residents attacked black residents and businesses in the area,” MyPreemieandMe founder Nikki Landrum said. “While the inability to embrace the humanity of others is deeply etched in American history, ultimately, our aim is to promote unity by hosting the Juneteenth celebration and the celebrations to follow.”
Landrum added that community organizers, MyPreemieandMe, The LOC and the Greenville Coalition decided to host a Juneteenth celebration in collaboration.
“Next year, we are inviting other organizations, churches, social civic clubs, business owners and members of the community to be a part of the celebration,” she said.
Those interested in participating or vendor space may contact Nikki Landrum at mypreemieandme@yahoo.com or at 662-347-3308. The deadline to enter is Tuesday.
