Though the Hornets fell short with a third season loss against the undefeated Greenwood Bulldogs, head coach George Richardson still noted some good things from his Hornets football team. The Hornets were defeated 16-0 as they moved to 0-3.
Early in the first half, the Hornets' swarming defense forced three fumbles against the Bulldogs, with one resulting from special teams. “Our kids did a great job of fighting the entire game, but we had a small handful of missed assignments, " said Richardson. “The best thing we can do is keep our momentum and take one game at a time.”
Immediately after the half, the Bulldogs’ Ramone Tate returned a 70 yard kick off to put the Bulldogs up by two touchdowns following a successful two-point conversion. The Hornets finally were able to get on the move when running back Jayden Brooks gained a 15-yard first down followed by Kaleb Titus, Hornets’ athletic quarterback, when he gained 15 more yards on a quarterback keeper. The Hornets defensive line then managed to get in the backfield and capitalized on contacting the Bulldogs’ quarterback Javion Meeks on several snaps. The Hornets’ defense was led by Omarion Hemphill, Kaleb Cotton, and Michael Shelly with highlighted solo tackles down the stretch. Richardson added, “both the offense and the defense showed some promise, and we will take this week to analyze all the things we need to fix.”
On Friday, the Hornets will welcome the Ruleville Tigers (0-3) to the nest as both squads look to secure a first win. The game will kick off at 7p.m. at Charles Kerg Field.
