Delta Center Stage presents the annual Summer Youth Musical and the first show of the 2023-24 Season, Disney’s Newsies Jr.
The Summer Youth Musical has been a tradition at Delta Center Stage since its beginning in 1979 with only one summer (2020) passing without a production cast entirely from local young people. This year the production team is led by two young DCS veterans, Hallie Payne and Samantha Stokes (directors) along with adult DCS veterans Austin McNeil (choreography) and Joey Polk (music direction). Forty local youth make up the cast and they have been working hard all summer to learn their lines, songs and dances.
“DCS is so proud of these young people and the adults who are giving of their time and experience to support their creative expression,” said Delta Center Stage Executive Director Wade Chambers. “What a great way to spend summer evenings having fun while learning the teamwork and discipline required to put on a theatrical production.”
This is DCS’s first production of this dramatic story based on historical events when the newsboys of New York City called a strike to protest their mistreatment at the hands of big publishers William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer.
When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right.
Including the now-classic songs "Carrying the Banner," "Seize the Day," and "Santa Fe," Newsies JR. is a timeless story full of spirit and heart.
Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies JR. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.
