HOLLANDALE — The celebration of Black History Month in the City of Hollandale continues with an event slated to pay homage to one of its own.
Supervisor Jerry Redmond Sr. of Washington County Board of Supervisors’ District 5, will honor the late Hollandale native, Bettye Joyce Wilson, for her service, dedication, and contributions.
The event is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the South Washington County Multiplex Center, 911 East Avenue N.
“To affirm and share her legacy, a room will be dedicated in her name,” a press release stated. “Her devotion to childhood development and her community led her to being an educator for 30 years. She was passionate about being at the table where change happens.”
Wilson was the first black woman elected to the Hollandale School District Board of Trustees where she served for five years.
She also was elected to serve as election commissioner for Washington County’s District 5 and did so for 15 years.
Often recognized for her volunteerism and stewardship, Wilson is remembered by her community as a committed educator, activist and woman with extraordinary integrity and wisdom who stood firm on the belief that the community could be better and fair.
“She was the epitome of black excellence so it is befitting that this honor takes place,” Redmond said.
