The county’s governing body gave Glendale Road resident and businessman Kevin Kingdom 30 days to remove a reasonable amount of his 20 vehicles from his property. Responding to complaints from neighbors, the county’s property inspection department paid Kingdom a visit and he appeared on the Washington County Board of Supervisors agenda on Monday, July 3 along with attorney Stan Perkins. “How many vehicles do you have?” inquired board attorney Willie Griffin. “Does Mr. Kingdom have license (plates) for each vehicle in Washington County? Are they operable and used for family purposes?”
Kingdom responded,” About 20 vehicles. In all honesty I have kids who have vehicles. They are ages 20, 25 and 26. And my wife has a vehicle and I have four work trucks, a dump truck and an RV. They are all related to either family use or my business.” Kingdom, a construction company owner and used car salesman, also temporarily holds vehicles at his home for sale at his business location on Redbud Street.
Kingdom’s residential area is zone A1 and will allow certain types of businesses such as country clubs, golf courses, farms, and group homes. But the number of vehicles prompted Board President Carl McGee to say, “You clearly have heard the statutes and the guidelines. Do you understand that the neighbors have a complaint and what relief are you willing to give?”
“Mr. Kingdom, we’re not trying to kill your passion, but we would hate to have tow trucks taking your property away. So, you do understand that you can have a number of vehicles within reason? McGee added.
Perkins preceded Kingdom to the podium as “and attorney and dear old friend.” In lawyerly fashion, Perkins spotted some wiggle room in the statues that governed vehicles at a residential dwelling and noticed that there was no number specifying the amount of vehicles one could have at their residence. Specifics were never presented, but it appears that county officials will know arbitrarily when enough vehicles have been removed to alleviate neighbors’ complaints. “We’re not talking about just removing three or four cars,” McGee said. “You’ve got 30 days to make a noticeable difference.’
