LELAND — Balancing the budget has not been without its challenges for the City of Leland.
During its first regular meeting of the new fiscal year, Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Board of Alderman held a closed session to discuss police department personnel.
It has been well documented since budget sessions began that some officers would have to be let go in order to keep the city’s budget “in the black.”
Upon returning from the closed session, the board voted unanimously to approve Chief Shawn McWright’s recommendation to terminate one first class officer and one third class officer “based on the fiscal year.”
The board also unanimously approved McWright’s recommendation to hire Regina Simpson of Indianola — a certified investigative officer of 20 years.
As a first class officer, Simpson’s salary will start at $35,381 per year.
