The Greenville City Council met for its final budget session for the fiscal year 2020-2021 this week.
Unanimously approved by the council, the budget is set with all funds reflecting a positive balance.
Those funds include the general fund, gaming, parks and recreation, Mid-Delta Regional Airport, debt service, public and municipal improvement funds, airport improvement, utility water and sewer fund, water and sewer capital improvements, sanitation, fleet department and pass through funds — library, school and old retirement pension accounts.
“We’re very proud to announce that we have balanced the budget and all funds are in the positive despite being in an ongoing pandemic,” Mayor Errick Simmons said. “We’re also pleased to announce that we’ve budgeted over $33 million to spend on infrastructure and sanitary sewer improvements in the City of Greenville.”
Simmons added that “the infrastructure improvement bag” has been pushed down the road for too long and he is also pleased to announce the current administration has picked it up.
Simmons said they’re fixing age old problems of over 60 years and are taking out bits and pieces to make the necessary improvements to redress the sanitary sewer and infrastructure issues in the city.
The council unanimously approved the budget for submission to a public hearing set for 5:30 p.m. Monday. Access to hearing will be made available via Zoom and on the city's public access channel.
