For reasons unknown, the William Alexander Percy Memorial Library was damaged with the majority done to the landscaping.
The Master Gardener Volunteer program members maintain the landscaping of the library.
Master Gardener volunteer Lottie Mae Dawkins said she and fellow member Lisa Smith immediately notified police of what had happened to the property and took pictures.
Dawkins said the services they provide with landscaping and beautification are without any financial assistance from the city or county and is why the Master Gardener volunteers were so disappointed to see the destruction.
Smith noted the sprinkler system installed for the flower beds and said, “They went and took the tubing out of the bed cut it into pieces.”
Smith also said it appears someone threw mud up against the window of the library and smeared it.
“We think it happened last night (Sunday) and when we got there this morning (Monday) it was just a mess,” she said of the incident.
Smith recalled going to a neighboring church of the library on Sunday and noticed nothing out of the ordinary, which led her to suspect the damage was done between late Sunday night and early Monday morning.
Volunteers quickly cleaned up the area and rectified the damage that had been done.
Smith said moving forward, she and fellow Master Gardener volunteers hope there is not another occurrence of damage to the library as they work so hard to maintain the attractiveness of the exterior.
