Nothing gets one in the holiday spirit quite like a good ol’ Christmas movie during a chilly evening while snuggled together with loved ones, along with snacks and, of course, a cup of hot cocoa.
As a way for the community to safely come together to celebrate the holidays, community member Marketta Landrum is offering a Holiday Drive-In Movie series.
The event is set for Friday, Dec. 18, in the parking lot of the Washington County Convention Center, 1040 S. Raceway Road.
For event goers’ viewing pleasure, there will be two films featured that evening.
Showing first at 5:30 p.m. will be Disney’s “The Santa Clause” starring Tim Allen. Following at 8 p.m. will be Netflix’s “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” starring Forest Whitaker.
Concessions will be sold and cookies and hot chocolate will be given for viewers to enjoy during the event as well as the opportunity to participate in a toy raffle in which a drawing will take place before, during and after the movie.
Tickets can be purchased for $5 each at eventbrite.com/e/holiday-drive-in-movie-tickets-132102834133 and each child will receive a raffle ticket upon arrival. This Holiday Movie Drive-In series makes Landrum’s second drive-in movie event as she held the first for Halloween.
“It was a success,” she said, “I had some people who really enjoyed it and said “you should do this again.” One kid as he was leaving the movie yelled, “This was the best Halloween ever!””
With such a reaction, Landrum was prompted to find a way to have children experience that kind of joy again during these unprecedented times. She said she truly enjoys watching movies with her family, friends and loved ones this time of year.
“It’s people in the community that are grateful for the different things you try to bring to the community. It’s those smiles on kids’ faces when they have enjoyed themselves and also receive a surprise at the end that makes you want to keep going,” Landrum added.
Negativity comes with the process, she noted, but it’s the positivity that outweighs the negativity for her.
“The holidays are here and some may not get to enjoy it as they wish, but I wanted to offer a fun, family friendly activity for all,” she shared.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to MyPREEMIEandMe — a local non-profit organization that assists families with premature babies.
